In a shocking story, a star center for a Canadian high school basketball team, was exposed as a 30-year old African refugee. The revelation led to him being arrested and detained in connection with the Immigration Refugee Protection Act.
South Sudanese native Jonathan Nicola, spent the last six months attending Catholic Central High School posing as a teenager. The 6-foot-9, 202 pound man became very well known and spent the previous months during the academic year living with CatholicCentral basketball coach Pete Cusumano. This was part of the Canada Homestay program while he lived in the country on a student visa. That visa is now likely to be terminated as Canada Border Services Agency, obtained evidence that appears to show Nicola is actually 30-years old, not 17-years old as he presented himself. That makes him a full 12 years older than the eldest competitors he’s played against in the 2015-16 season.
“Generally I can tell you that we have a system of checks and balances in place that whenever international students are coming into any of our schools, we make sure that they have all of the necessary government documentation that they require in order to be in one of our schools,” said Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board spokesman Stephen Fields.
Fields insists that students were never at risk due to a fellow student.
“Again, generally speaking, if we felt at any time that there is any kind of threat to any of our students at any of our schools, then we would act appropriately,” said Fields.
Due to privacy concerns, Canadian officials have been unable to provide any specifics about the case.
Nicola had a detention review on Tuesday before the Immigration and Refugee Board, and they decided he should remain in custody. He has another hearing scheduled for next week.
