Michael Vick was released from a federal prison in 2009 after serving 21 months for his role in operating a dogfighting ring. Animal lovers still won’t let Vick live it down and even protested him becoming a quarterback with the Pittsburgh Steelers this year. Vick has apologized numerous times and joined animal rights causes trying to make amends for his past mistakes. This appears to be another attempt.
Today Vick urged fans to sign a petition to allow officers to rescue dogs in hot cars.
According to the petition:
The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback will meet with State lawmakers inside the Pennsylvania legislature and lobby the Democratic caucus. School children from Harrisburg will accompany Vick. The goal is to pass an important animal welfare bill and teach children the political process along the way. State Representative Jake Wheatley, Jr. and State Representative Ed Gainey from the Pittsburgh area are hosting the legislative visit.
Vick is pushing lawmakers to pass PA House Bill 1516, nicknamed the “Pets in Cars” bill. It would give police officers more authority to save a dog or cat in distress if necessary. An officer who removes a cat or dog from a hot car would not be held liable for damages.
Some people are applauding Vick for his efforts, others see it as a publicity stunt and others are reminding him about the issues facing black men that are more important. One thing is for sure, you can’t please everybody.
