The New York Knicks are currently on a Texas road trip and had a chance to win their second game in a row after defeating the San Antonio Spurs. The Knicks have been very much underwhelming this season but showed promise on Friday night against the Houston Rockets even with a chance to secure the win, then J.R Smith happened. For someone who’s known for taking “wtf” type of shots, even this one surprised everyone.
Tied with the Rockets with under a minute remaining, Knicks inbounded the ball with 16 seconds left on the shot clock. After a miss from Beno Udrih, an offensive rebound from Tyson Chandler and a reset of the offense, Udrih got it back and kicked it to J.R. Smith at the top of the three-point arc with 21 seconds remaining.
Of course Smith realized his mistake as the ball left his fingertips. The Knicks could’ve held the ball and formulated a proper last shot but Smith’s ill-timed three-pointer bounced off the rim and the rebound was secured by the Rockets. After being fouled, Aaron Brooks shot two free-throws that basically gave the Rockets the win.
After the game Smith admitted his mistake telling Frank Isola of the Daily News:
J.R. Smith says he thought the Knicks were down 2 when he took the ill advised three. “That’s bad basketball IQ on me,” he said.
He also came on twitter and tweeted:
Bone head play! Slander well deserved!
Some people say Bargnani’s was worst but at least the Knicks won that game…
