Tonight at its press conference at CES, Nvidia introduced its next-generation mobile processor, the Tegra K1. Building upon last year's Tegra 4, which powers the Nvidia Shield, the Tegra K1 adopts the same Kepler architecture found in the company's GeForce desktop GPUs, touting a staggering 192 CUDA graphics cores. Nvidia claims that the Tegra K1 effectively bridges the gap between PCs and smartphones and tablets in terms of raw horsepower and performance, offering the same effects as the Xbox One and PS4.
As part of its showing, Nvidia announced that Epic Games would be bringing its upcoming Unreal Engine 4 to the Tegra K1.
While Nvidia has given the 192 graphics-specific cores top billing, the K1 will actually be available in two flavors — a quad-core 32-bit system-on-a-chip based on ARM's Cortex A15 CPU architecture and a proprietary 64-bit dual-core "Super Core CPU." Nvidia says the K1 delivers over twice the performance of Apple's A7 processor.
Tegra K1-enabled products will arrive in the first half of 2014, while the 64-bit version will ship in the latter half of the year. Specific products have not been announced, but Nvidia says it has designed the chip for a wide range of devices, including smartphones, tablets, Android games consoles, and even cars.
