The actor died in a Los Angeles hospital on New Year’s Eve reportedly from an illness he’d been stuggling to recover from. James Avery, who played the character of Phil Banks on the hit sitcom ‘Fresh Prince of Bel Air,’ died at the age of 65 on Dec. 31.
James Avery, known for his role as Uncle Phil on the hit 90s sitcom “Fresh Prince of Bel Air” died on New Year’s Eve, reports TMZ.
The 65-year-old actor reportedly recently underwent open heart surgery, and died from complications from the procedure on Dec. 31.
Avery’s wife, Barbara, was by his side before leaving for a brief moment to get food. Upon her return he was dead.
Alfonso Ribeiro (right bottom) tweeted his condolences. ‘I’m deeply saddended to say that James Avery has passed away. He was a second father to me. I will miss him greatly.’
Alfonso Ribeiro, who played the character of Carlton Banks on the comedy series, tweeted his condolences.
“I’m deeply saddened to say that James Avery has passed away,” he wrote Wednesday along with a photo of the late actor and his wife.
“He was a second father to me. I will miss him greatly.”
Miguel A Nunez Jr, who worked with Avery on the show "Sparks," also expressed his grief.
"Rest in Peace James Avery. Love You. One of the best actors of our time," he tweeted.
It's the second death of a "Fresh Prince" alum in recent weeks. In late December, the show's producer Jeff Pollack was found dead in the jogging area of Hermosa Beach, Calif. He was discovered by a passerby who contacted police, and appeared to have been mid-run when he collapsed. Pollack was 54.
