Deron Williams made his intentions very clear on Monday. His plan is to re-sign with the Nets in the summer, and the best way to ensure that happens is if they acquire Dwight Howard.
“That would be enough to convince me,” Williams said during a lunch with beat writers.
Nets general manager Billy King knows what he has to do.
King talked to Williams before the lockout about what players he would like in order to make the Nets a championship contender. Howard always topped that list. King, who was able to speak to Williams on Monday for the first time since the lockout began, will make a run at Howard.
The Nets would dangle a package that includes Brook Lopez and two first-round picks to Orlando for Howard and Hedo Turkoglu’s bloated contract. But King also is trying to make a splash in free agency by signing a big man, with Nene or Tyson Chandler the prime targets. Deals can be signed starting Friday, which is the first day of training camp.
Williams said he believes in King, but it sounds as if he’s thinking beyond who is on the open market.
“I don’t think there’s enough in
free agency to have a championship team right away,” Williams said.
