Motorola Razr gets Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich early

Posted by Unknown on 11:30 PM

A HACKER has managed to successfully port the latest version of Google's Android mobile operating system to the Motorola Razr smartphone.

It was slightly disappointing that the Razr launched with Android 2.3 Gingerbread. However, even though Motorola had confirmed it will upgrade the handset, a hacker has got there first with a basic port of the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich version of the operating system.
DroidTh3ory said, "We have a successful boot of Ice Cream Sandwich on the DROID RAZR!! This Thread will be dedicated to keeping you up on the progress of we are making porting it to the Bad Ass RAZR. I will provide a list of working and non working features, news, pics, and videos."

The short video below shows ICS running on the Razr. It's not the best filming we've seen with the phone sideways on, but nevertheless the port works. The touchscreen is one of the only things working so far and requires two fingers instead of one.

Using Safestrap the phone is running both Gingerbread and ICS. Admittedly the port is in its early stages and still requires some effort towards getting more features to work, like WiFi.

When we saw the phone at its launch back in October Motorola told us it would roll out an update in the first quarter of next year. We haven't heard anything more definite than this, so it's a choice of being patient or get hacking.
